Es war der 28. April und ein ganz besonderer Tag. Noch nie war ich der Natur und dem Weltuntergang zugleich so nahe. Zu Beginn des Tages f\u00fchrte uns der Weg durch einen traumhaft sch\u00f6nen Naturpark. Auch als nichtgl\u00e4ubiger Mensch k\u00f6nnte man beginnen, an einen k\u00fcnstlerischen Sch\u00f6pfer zu glauben, wenn man diese Sch\u00f6nheit sieht. Zudem habe ich mein zweites Wildschwein gesehen. Das erste hatte mich ja gleich am ersten Tag des Camino de Madrid begr\u00fc\u00dft. Scheint eine Art pers\u00f6nliche Pilgertradition bei mir zu werden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ich achtete auf meinen Wasservorrat und fand eine malerische Stelle f\u00fcr eine Pause an einem kleinen Flusslauf. Hier merkte ich, dass ich bereits einen guten Teil meines Ballasts vergessen hatte und v\u00f6llig zufrieden auf einer Bank sa\u00df und meinen Hummus l\u00f6ffelte. Nach einem unfassbar steilen Aufstieg, bei dem die meisten Mountainbiker erstaunt abstiegen, erwartete mich beim Mirador del Cerro del Calvario<\/em> ein traumhaftes Panorama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Als ich im malerischen Almad\u00e9n de la Plata ankam, erwartete mich eine \u00dcberraschung. Zuvor hatte ich mit schlechtem Handyempfang zu k\u00e4mpfen \u2013 das schrieb ich aber der Abgelegenheit und dem Naturpark zu. Ich ging also in die n\u00e4chste Bar und freute mich auf einen Kaffee. Innen war es ziemlich dunkel, und der Wirt sch\u00fcttelte nur mit dem Kopf. Ich traf auf ein bekanntes Gesicht und erfuhr ziemlich schnell, dass es im Ort keinen Strom gab. Das erkl\u00e4rte auch die schlechte Netzabdeckung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wir dachten uns zun\u00e4chst nichts weiter dabei und gingen zur Herberge. Dort traf ich auf noch mehr bekannte Gesichter. Wir gingen von einem lokalen Stromausfall aus \u2013 doch wir t\u00e4uschten uns. Unser Herbergsvater erkl\u00e4rte uns, dass praktisch ganz Westeuropa keinen Strom h\u00e4tte. Wahrscheinlich der Russe. Hackerangriff. Alles st\u00fcnde still. Kein Radio, kein Internet … v\u00f6llige Isolation. Er riet uns, sofort am n\u00e4chsten Tag umzukehren und den n\u00e4chsten Flug nach Hause zu nehmen. Er war sich sicher, die Zivilisation st\u00fcnde vor dem Zusammenbruch. Wir versuchten, das Ganze gelassen zu nehmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man versuchte, seine Vorr\u00e4te aufzustocken, um wenigstens f\u00fcr die n\u00e4chsten Tage versorgt zu sein. Wir f\u00fcllten so viel Wasser ab, wie wir konnten, und duschten uns. Der Supermarkt \u00f6ffnete nicht wie geplant \u2013 die Kasse funktionierte nicht. Ein kleiner Kiosk versorgte mich mit Weingummi und N\u00fcssen. Dann schalteten wir alle unsere Handys aus und gingen gemeinsam in die n\u00e4chste Bar. Der ganze Ort speiste k\u00f6niglich. Alles aus K\u00fchl- oder Gefrierschrank musste verzehrt werden. Gekocht wurde mit Gas. Bezahlt wurde bar. Die Stimmung kippte ins Gute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wo w\u00e4re man in so einer Situation lieber \u2013 in einer Gro\u00dfstadt oder in einem kleinen Dorf mit funktionierendem Brunnen und genug N\u00fcssen f\u00fcr die n\u00e4chsten Tage? Wir entschieden uns, gelassen zu bleiben. Wir hatten keine belastbaren Informationen. Also schlossen wir uns dem an, was der ganze Ort tat: Wir tranken das Bier, solange es noch kalt war, und gingen fr\u00fch zu Bett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ich meine, es war gegen 3:00 Uhr in der Nacht, als die Stra\u00dfenbeleuchtung wieder anging. Man tippte schnell eine Nachricht an die Liebsten und kuschelte sich wieder ein. Wird schon alles gut werden. Der Rucksack ist voll. Die gelben Pfeile sind analog \u2013 und f\u00fcr die einzelnen Schritte braucht es keinen Strom. Alle im Raum wussten, dass wir Freunde werden w\u00fcrden. Das wurden wir auch. Wir passten aufeinander auf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was April 28th, and a very special day. Never before had I felt so close to both nature and the end of the world at the same time. The day began with a walk through a breathtakingly beautiful nature park. Even as a non-believer, one could start to believe in some artistic creator when faced with such beauty. I also saw my second wild boar. The first had already greeted me on the first day of the Camino de Madrid. Seems like it\u2019s becoming a personal pilgrimage tradition for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I kept an eye on my water supply and found a picturesque spot by a small stream to take a break. Sitting on a bench, spooning hummus, I realized I had already let go of a good amount of mental baggage and felt completely content. After an incredibly steep climb \u2014 where even most mountain bikers dismounted in awe \u2014 I was rewarded at the Mirador del Cerro del Calvario<\/em> with a stunning panoramic view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I arrived in the picturesque town of Almad\u00e9n de la Plata, a surprise awaited me. I had been dealing with poor mobile reception earlier, which I blamed on the remoteness and the surrounding nature park. I walked into the next bar, looking forward to a coffee. Inside, it was quite dark, and the bartender just shook his head. I saw a familiar face and quickly learned that the entire town had no power. That also explained the poor reception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, we thought it was just a local outage and headed to the hostel. There, I met even more familiar faces. We assumed it was a temporary issue \u2014 but we were wrong. The hostel owner explained that practically all of Western Europe was without electricity. Probably the Russians. A cyberattack. Everything was down. No radio, no internet\u2026 complete isolation. He advised us to turn back the next day and catch the next flight home. He was convinced civilization was collapsing. We tried to stay calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People began to stock up on supplies to be covered for the next few days. We filled up as much water as we could and took showers. The supermarket didn\u2019t open as planned \u2014 the checkout system wasn\u2019t working. A small kiosk provided me with gummy bears and nuts. Then we all turned off our phones and went together to the nearest bar. The whole town feasted like royalty. Everything in fridges and freezers had to be eaten. Cooking was done with gas. Payment was cash only. The mood shifted for the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we asked ourselves: where would you rather be in a situation like this \u2014 in a big city or in a small village with working wells and enough nuts to get through a few days? We decided to remain calm. We had no reliable information. So, we did what everyone else in town did: we drank the beer while it was still cold and went to bed early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think it was around 3:00 a.m. when the streetlights came back on. Everyone quickly sent a message to their loved ones and snuggled back into bed. Everything would be fine. The backpack was packed. The yellow arrows are analog \u2014 and for each step, you don\u2019t need electricity. Everyone in the room knew we were going to become friends. And we did.
